Sailing and Yachting
Phuket,
located in the Andaman Sea with its clear sparkling waters, is a natural
base for sailing and yachting. This is packed with accommodation facilities
and yachting services for all kinds. At the same time, there are scores
of uninhabited islands to explore and despite the many attractions, the
Andaman Sea has yet to become congested with boat traffic.
The Andaman Sea has very good weather conditions all year and is
comparable to any region in the world in this respect.
The long northeast monsoon season from November to May creates
the best climate for sailing, with the best winds from November to February.
The weather conditions are then even better than those in the Mediterranean.
Steady winds, clear skies, together with flat seas and clean, clear 26ºC
water allow for the finest sailing experiences. Related activities such
as windsurfing and
diving
are a pure pleasure, no wetsuit needed!
During
the south-east monsoon from May to October, sailing conditions in
the Andaman Sea are not as favorable. The western coast of Thailand is
then exposed to squalls and heavy seas from the Indian Ocean. However,
in the calm and protected waters on the eastern side of Phuket, safe and
exciting sailing is possible all year. There are safe harbors and a full
range of yachting facilities available in Ao Chalong and Laem Phrao. Good
sailing is also possible throughout the whole of Phang Nga Bay with its
towering calcareous rock formations.
In Phuket Town there are many sailing boats available for charter
at quite reasonable prices. Some even offer facilities to share the cost
and enjoyment of operating larger boats with several other sailors.
